Working with the Village Environmental Committee, the Public Works Department is reducing the amount of garbage that gets carried into local waterways through storm drains. The Department has been installing catch basin baskets that sit in stormwater drains and prevent litter and other debris from being washed off roads into local waterways.
"LittaTrap" is the brand name of the mesh basket system, which is designed to capture and retain 100 percent of plastic and other pollutants larger than five millimeters. The Environmental Committee also has been collaborating with the Loggerhead Marinelife Center, which collects, sorts, and analyzes debris in waterways, and studies its effects on wildlife.
In the first half of 2022 two catch basins were placed in Village storm drains, and the Committee is planning to obtain and install additional devices in the near future.
Public Works crews monitor the traps and clean them to ensure proper water flow. The use of the new catch baskets will result in cleaner waterways throughout the Village and will reduce litter's impact on wildlife.
