The Village has reached a settlement with the owners of the Camelot Hotel at 1000 U.S. Highway 1, which will result in the demolition of the existing hotel and all structures on site. The property had been accumulating fines for code enforcement violations since 2018 and the hotel was found to be “unsafe” by the Village’s Special Magistrate on March 31st.
At the March 31st hearing, the Special Magistrate granted the Village authority to demolish the buildings and recover costs for demolition in the form of a lien on the property. Rather than use tax dollars to demolish the buildings and staff time to manage the process, the Village has worked with the owners of the property to reach an agreement whereby the owners would demolish the buildings themselves.
Following the removal of some FPL equipment from the site, the owners will complete demolition of the property within four months. Although the property owners have no imminent plans to redevelop the property, they have benchmarks to meet regarding the sale or redevelopment of the property as part of the agreement with the Village.
