The Village Environmental Committee and the Public Works Department work together to reduce garbage being carried into local waterways, and have installed "LittaTraps" in key test locations. LittaTrap is a brand name of a catch basin basket that sits inside the stormwater drain and prevents litter and other debris carried by stormwater from entering the storm drain system.
The LittaTrap's mesh basket is designed to capture and retain 100 percent of plastic and other pollutants over five millimeters in size. The Environmental Committee also has collaborated with the Loggerhead Marinelife Center to sort and analyze debris that is collected. Two catch basins have been strategically placed in the Village, with the hopes to install additional devices in the future as funding allows.
Public Works crews continue to monitor the traps and clean them as necessary to ensure proper flow of water. Their efforts will directly result in cleaner waterways throughout the Village.
